In the 1980s, women doctors, who were excluded from a male doctors’ educational group, decided to form their own meeting. The Toowoomba Women Doctors Society met monthly for several years for education purposes and to support each other in balancing medical and home commitments. Fast track to 2019, several members of that same group, now retired, but excluded from attending the existing Toowoomba Male Doctors Retirees Group, once again decided to form their own open to women retirees and those transitioning to retirement.
At the  inaugural meeting in July of 2019:
1) Carol Cox OAM was elected Spokesperson, Betty Tan Minutes Secretary & Lib Thorne Membership Secretary.
2) The name Toowoomba Women Doctors Society (Retirees) was adopted and the decision on an informal nickname deferred until later.
3) To meet 4 times a year, a morning tea, held in different members’ homes.
3) At each meeting one member speaks on how she ‘got into medicine & how she got out of it’.
From this introduction, topics of common interest for future discussion are emerging and possibly guest speakers might be invited in the future.
An email survey of current members of TWDSRetirees  found everyone adjusting to the ‘lock-down’/social distancing’ way of living in many interesting and creative ways.
The general feeling was that we postpone the May meeting till August 10th
                                      August 10th 10.00am
                                      A Meeting in ‘real time’
Morning tea at the home of Judy Egerton
If this August meeting is not possible, or if members find email contact not enough in the meantime, Carol Cox has offered to host a Zoom meeting .
